Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to snorkel with sharks?+
Yes. The shark species we encounter (mako, blue, silky) are pelagic predators that hunt fish in the open ocean. They are not interested in humans. Shark attacks on snorkelers are extremely rare and statistically you are far more likely to be hurt driving to the marina than swimming with these animals. Our biologist guides brief every guest on positioning, body language, and what to do if a shark approaches.
Which shark species will I see?+
The most common species in the Sea of Cortez are mako sharks (the fastest sharks in the ocean), blue sharks, and silky sharks. Hammerheads, oceanic whitetips, and tiger sharks are seasonal possibilities but less common. We don't bait or feed sharks. We use a small chum line to attract them and let them approach naturally.
When is the best time of year for the Shark Safari?+
Peak season is November through May, when water temperatures and current patterns concentrate pelagic sharks closer to shore. We run shark expeditions year-round, but encounter rates are highest during the cooler months. Summer expeditions still produce sightings but require more searching.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer or experienced diver?+
You need to be a confident swimmer in open water. The Shark Safari is in deep ocean (200+ meters deep) with no bottom visible, which can feel intimidating to new snorkelers. No diving experience required. Snorkeling skill is enough. If you've never snorkeled before, we recommend doing the Snorkeling Tour first to build comfort.
Is this expedition ethical?+
Yes. We follow strict no-touch, no-feed, no-cage protocols. Our chum line attracts sharks but doesn't condition them to associate humans with food. We don't bait directly. The Shark Safari supports shark conservation by demonstrating that live sharks are worth more in the water than dead in fishing nets, which is the entire economic logic of pelagic shark tourism in Baja.
How long is the Shark Safari?+
Half-day expedition, roughly 5 hours total including the offshore boat run to find sharks. Departures from Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo, typically around 7:30 AM. The shark zones are 30 to 60 minutes offshore depending on conditions.
How many guests on the Shark Safari?+
Maximum 8 guests per expedition, often fewer. Shark encounters require calm coordination and minimal noise in the water. Smaller groups mean better encounters and safer water entries. Private bookings available.
What's included?+
Snorkel equipment, wetsuit, biologist guide, marina and park fees, water, snacks, fruit, and underwater photography from our team. Not included: hotel transfers, gratuities, travel insurance.
