Frequently Asked Questions

When is whale watching season in Los Cabos?+
Whale watching season in Baja California Sur runs from December through April. Humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to mate and give birth. Peak season is January and February when the bay is full of breaching, tail-slapping, and singing humpbacks. Gray whales migrate along the Pacific coast during the same months.
Which whale species will I see?+
Humpback whales are the most common in the Sea of Cortez side near San José del Cabo. They breach, slap their tails, and sing during mating displays. Gray whales pass along the Pacific coast (Magdalena Bay area) during the same months. Occasional sightings of orcas, blue whales, fin whales, and pilot whales happen but are not guaranteed.
How close do we get to the whales?+
We follow Mexican federal regulations and the global ethical whale watching code: minimum 60 meters from the whales, never approach mothers with calves head-on, never chase, never block their path. Often the whales themselves approach the boat out of curiosity. Those moments are unforgettable, but we never force them.
Will we definitely see whales?+
During peak season (December to April), sightings on the Sea of Cortez are extremely high. Most expeditions during this window encounter multiple whales. We don't guarantee sightings (no ethical operator can), but in 5+ years of operation our peak season sighting rate has been near 100%.
Is the whale watching tour ethical?+
Yes. We operate under our Ocean First Policy: small boats only, max 8 guests, federal distance regulations strictly followed, no engine pressure on whales, no chasing, no aggressive approaches. Our biologist guides educate guests on whale behavior so the experience is informative as well as ethical. Mass tour operators with 30+ guests on speedboats stress the whales. We don't.
How long is the whale watching expedition?+
Half-day expedition, roughly 3 to 4 hours. Morning departures from Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo when the water is calmest and whale activity is highest.
Is it good for kids and families?+
Yes. Whale watching is the most family-friendly expedition we offer. Kids 4 and up are welcome. The boat is stable, no swimming required, and seeing a humpback breach is a memory that stays with kids forever. We have life jackets in all sizes.
What's included?+
Biologist guide, marina and park fees, water, snacks, fruit, and photography from our team. Not included: hotel transfers, gratuities, travel insurance.
